L'Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) or la Francophonie as it is now known can be defined as the world community of French-speaking countries, or the collective unit formed by French-speaking people. The Organisation represents countries and regions where a significant proportion of the population are francophones.

There are an estimated 274 million French speakers worldwide.
French is one of the very few language spoken all over the world and ranked the sixth most widely spoken language in the world.
It is Europe's second most widely spoken mother tongue with over 77 million speakers, ahead of English (61 million).
It is also one of the working languages of the United Nations and many other international institutions (OECD, UNESCO, WTO...).
According to the OIF (Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie), the number of French speakers will rose to over 700 million by 2050!
No wonder it is the second most widely learned foreign language in the world with almost 120 million students :-)
